A Bit of History ....
William Higgins purchased his first floor sanding machine
in October of 1942. He was a one man operation. In 1956, Ted
started working with his father and took responsibility for the entire
operation a few years later.
In spite of the popularity of carpet
and vinyl flooring in the 50's and 60's, Ted's business grew. By the
early 70's, with the introduction of polyurethane, hardwood flooring again
became popular. People began tearing up their old carpet and vinyl
to find beautiful hardwood flooring underneath. Higgins
Flooring would refinish these floors and make them look new. In the
80's, new home developments began to spring up everywhere. New
home buyers wanted an upgrade, so they chose hardwood flooring with the
new easy care finish. When renovating, existing home owners wanted
to enhance their home so they too chose hardwood flooring. In the
late 80's prefinished flooring became a phenomenon. Now a floor
could be installed with no smell and minimal dust and disruption.
In the 90's, came the discovery that many synthetic carpets gave off
gases. No matter how often you vacuumed them, dust clung to the
carpet.. The first thing Doctors recommended to those with allergies
and breathing problems was to get rid of carpets and replace them with
hardwood or an alternate floor covering.
Higgins Flooring grew with the times. By the time Ted moved to
his present location in 1987, he had 20 employees. Today, Higgins
Flooring employs 40 people and has 25 vehicles on the road. Ted
Higgins has maintained the high standards of quality established by his
father. It is not unusual to find Ted himself inspecting a job site
to make sure it meets his standards. Our priority is a satisfied customer.
We are proud to offer a product that lasts a lifetime.
